The jungle leads us beyond social and cultural codes, to a state of nature where humans must confront themselves to find themselves. Society increasingly makes us forget our inner lives and concentrate on the outer ones. — Apichatpong Weerasethakul, nicknamed “The Sergei Eisenstein of the Jungle”

In Apichatpong’s work, the jungle is a radically different world, populated by spirits, mysterious beings, and half-animals. It is the realm of dreams, the non-rational, of secrets and desires. Whoever enters it leaves the safe communal space of the town or home and faces the unknown.” — Natalie Boehler

In Sherad Anthony Sanchez’s Jungle Love, the jungle is all those things and more. It starts with a pair of young lovers from the city blithely lost and searching for a tribe in its midst, all the while using its landscapes for sexual relief. They taunt and torment their native guide with carnal innuendos and his temptations soon start to burgeon. About to cross their paths is an elderly woman, who sexually scorned by a younger married man, steals his child, and escapes through the jungle. Left momentarily alone, the infant in her possession mysteriously disappears into thin air. Meanwhile, a detail of army men undertake drills and training and take a swim in a nearby river. While there, one of them becomes enchanted by an invisible entity in the midst of the jungle.

Harnessing the patterns and paradigms about the jungle articulated by jungle-crazy directors like Herzog and Weerasethakul, Sherad Sanchez incorporates into his film a cross-fertilization of all those ideas and translates them into a hybrid both imitative and yet original. As in Aguirre: The Wrath of God, Jungle Love is all about “our dreams and deepest nightmares.” More on this later. As in Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall Past Lives, Sanchez’s jungle teems with “spirits and mysterious beings.” These presences are both self-evident and hinted at here. As in Tropical Malady, Jungle Love is an escape from “social and cultural codes,” as evidenced by the free love that reigns in its midst. What sets apart Sherad Sanchez’s Jungle Love is a light, unfreighted tonality and mood — one of ludic and playful impishness and mischief that refreshingly distinguishes its vision from the often portentous, sombre and humorless approach of other filmmakers trying to condense the mysteries of the jungle. This can be ascribed, for one, to Sanchez’s flippant treatment of all the denizens of this jungle, both tourists and transients, on one hand, and the resident spirits and the lost tribe, on the other.

Almost all of the characters in Jungle Love seem obliviously trapped or ensconced in the maze of the jungle so that they never appear grim nor do they angle for sympathy. While the old woman seems distraught over losing the baby, her condition does not prove pitiful. While the urbanites may forever go in circles beyond anyone’s help, they aren’t tragic: we may even see their vanishing as just deserts for their desecration and carnalization of their surroundings. When an army man receives pleasuring from an invisible jungle spirit, the sight of orgasm is not off-putting nor perverse. When we get a glimpse of the tribe, they are a collection of fertility goddesses, with big, ample bosoms, bathed in prismatic colors. Sanchez strikes all the right notes — no grace notes at all — and all the right chords to impart the film’s effects, affects and sensations. Jungle Love is fingerprinted with a lightness of touch, and an even-handed, never over-the-top sense of the magical and mysterious. This moderation of that sense of the off-kilter is reinforced by a sparing and well-placed use of stylized details (a color filter or two, and how about the singing motley crew with animal masks who materialize at well-timed moments?).

The soundtrack is also a keeper, keeping everything on the upbeat with humorous levity. The main theme is a pop song blaring from the radio with lyrics that go “Jesus loves you, ‘cos Mama Mary loves you.” Infectious. So infectious is this insistent religious refrain that it starts to hint at a prevailing state of sin, accompanied by the possibility of redemption: it is not hard to imagine the locale of Jungle Love as a halfway point for its oversexed and wayward characters. A concept of purgatory hasn’t been this much fun, but Jungle Love is indeed littered with clues of uncertain liminality. Now and again are images of limbo bordering on nightmare or hell: there are close-ups of the infant-stealing woman looking on with anguish, then the indiscriminate couplings, the sexual debauchery, and the sudden transmogrification of characters from one form to another. This is not paradise yet.

More than a conception of purgatory, or an altered state of supernatural enchantment, Jungle Love posits a world of our more immediate, more worldly and more concrete nightmares. Remember that Sanchez’s major opus, Imburnal, is no harmless experimental film about nothing. Not too far-fetched Jungle Love may be regarded as a political allegory about a country in the thrall of powerful forces — where sex is a sinful opiate of the masses, where the urban rich flaunt their arrogance and indulge their pleasures, where nightmares are the currency, where only the military forces experience a guiltless, rejuvenating sense of jouissance. This could be the spitting image of a Christian Third World country, a kind of banana republic. Neither Herzog nor Weerasethakul could have visualized and conceived such an analogy. Sherad Anthony Sanchez’s Jungle Love is one fun and memorable romp through the great unknown that is the primeval forest as something we have inhabited all along.

This, our jungle, is obscene.

Cinema One Originals Presents Biggest Lineup

Cinema One Originals proudly presents its biggest lineup for its 8th year run with 13 competition feature films; divided into two categories: “Cinema One Plus,” composed of seasoned directors awarded with a two million pesos production budget each and “Cinema One Currents,” composed of new breeds awarded with a one million pesos budget each.

“Cinema One Plus” entries include “Mariposa Sa Hawla Ng Gabi” by Richard Somes, “Mater Dolorosa” by Adolfo Alix Jr., and “Baybayin” by Auraeus Solito.

“Ang Paglalakbay Ng Mga Bituin Sa Gabing Madilim” by Arnel Mardoquio; “CATNIP” by Kevin Dayrit, “Melodrama Negra” by Ma. Isabel Legarda, “Slumber Party” by Emmanuel Dela Cruz, “Pascalina” by Pam Miras, “Anak Araw” by Gym Lumbera, “Edsa Xxx” by Khavn De La Cruz, “Aberya” by Christian Linaban, “Palitan” by Ato Bautista, and “Mamay Umeng” by Dwein Baltazar complete the entries for “Cinema One Currents.”

The festival will also give tribute to Philippine classics through the screening of three of the most important restored films that greatly contributed to the foundation of Philippine Cinema: “Oro Plata Mata,” “Himala” and “Genghis Khan.”

“Oro Plata Mata,” the 1892 film directed by Peque Gallaga, will serve as the opening film for the prestigious event while the award-winning film “Himala” will celebrate its 30th anniversary through an exclusive showing of a documentary special by “Ka Oryang” director Sari Dalena and writer/editor Keith Sicat.

An exhibition programme featuring guest films will also take place in the festival to include special screenings of “Alagwa,” “Supremo,” “Jungle Love,” and “Graceland.”

The 2012 Cinema One Originals Festival will run from Nov. 28 to Dec. 9 at Robinsons Galleria Movie World and from Nov. 29 to Dec. 4 at the Edsa Shang Cineplex. The awards night will be held on Dec. 3 at Studio 1 ABS-CBN Main Building.

The 2012 Cinema One Originals Festival is an annual project of the Cinema One, the local movie channel on cable, owned and operated by Creative Programs, Inc. (CPI).

More exotic but also much more radical proposals are both Filipino CinemaXXI: Tagalog, Gym Lumbrera, and Jungle Love, Sherad Anthony Sanchez. While the Filipino film earned a place on the international festival circuit, basically because the disclosure of directors like Brillante Mendoza and Raya Martin, but it seems that the quarry is still open. The two films now brings Roma pass away from civilization, in what seems like a celebration of the power of the jungle, and both deliberately deviate from the classic Aristotelian narrative. But there the similarities end. Filmed in black and white whose texture suggests the old Super 8, Tagalog is the logic of dreams and aesthetics of silent cinema. In fact, a bit like Independence, Raya Martin, the film has no dialogue and is designed from the interaction of big shots and close-ups, inhabited by an elderly couple, zealous guardians of memory and past. But like their dreams, or their nightmares, those images are invaded by others, from found footage, films tacking anonymous red by the action of time, stories of distant worlds and past, such as a European erotic film of the ’60s.

Speaking of eroticism, that is the central theme of Jungle Love, Sherad Anthony Sanchez, known Bafici, where two years ago was a mention in the Cinema section of the future, for his previous film, Sewer. Here, as in the former, there are explicit sex, in this case a couple of campers. But eroticism is not so much that as the director in the lust of the Philippine jungle, in the incessant intercourse foliage in the vaginal and phallic shapes discovered in caves and mountains. In this area almost fantastic circulate also other characters: a woman fleeing barefoot with a baby that is not theirs, some masked spirits who pursue young soldiers and some very real, suggesting a militarized zone, dangerous. Certain touches a catchy pop-gospel song on the radio, the emergence of cartography of the Philippines via google maps-provide new and puzzling elements to a film as free as irreverent.

Wherever I go, just don’t lose hope and keep on supporting local independent music. Thank you Rob Cham for this illustration. He also did a bunch of Meiday posters for free, the header of this blog, and the miss meiday shirt. Everyone has to move on and respect my decision of quitting the music scene. Rob is ultimately one of the biggest supporters of the movement by doing stuff for free and thank you so much love for this one last illustration.

SUPPORT LOCAL INDEPENDENT MUSIC is a line I borrowed from my org in UP Diliman, UP Underground Music Community. The org will stage the Valentine special of the annual UP Fair so who knows, you might see me there again, haha let’s see.

I was supposed to fly to Rome tomorrow to attend presscon and world premiere of this film I was a big part of, Sherad Sanchez’ Jungle Love, but due to the problems I had to face in Manila, I decided not to go last minute.

I just wish they spelled my name right though.

There is news that we got into the biggest film festival in the States next year but I am still crossing my fingers. This is the second feature film I was part of with lead actress role, and I must say, I did some scenes here that I’m not capable of in real life. There is a one time joint Cinemanila and CinemaOne special screening for the Philippine premiere but it will not run in theaters. It’s too hardcore haha.

I might fly back to Manila for the screening. You see, there might be a career in this. I just ended my music prod career so might as well find something else.

An anthem doesn’t attempt to be anything. It just is. And that’s everything I like about Sandwich’s break-out hit “Sugod.” It’s a song that aside from transcending social class and margins, tackles the quintessential hymn of all music festival goers and free gig campers, the glee that ensued in every beer-wasted rock n’ roll moshpits, and the fun and fulfilment live music brings to the table. While not everyone will agree with me, it is without any doubt, this generation’s answer to Juan Dela Cruz Band’s “Ang Himig Natin” or Sampaguita’s “Bonggahan”—an anthem that nurtures the wild side of youth culture in an authentic way, where it smells natural and bohemian.

Same can be said on “Mayday,” Sandwich’s attempt to rewrite “Sugod” with a surf-rock flair that recalls The Pixies and a poppier Sonic Youth. But instead on universalizing the collective embrace of every gig goers out there, Raymund and gang pays tribute on the culprit behind some of the best rock n’ roll parties and gigs thrown in recent memory. Yes, more than anything else, it’s a song about Mei Bastes—the tattooed events organizer who at one point in her life, brought free live music to a different dimension that united all music fans from all walks of life. It’s an anthem to get your hips to dancing and like every nostalgia fetishists, a recollection of a time when every Meiday gig is worth looking forward to. Watch it here:
